Role of heparanase in pulmonary hypertension

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a pathophysiological condition of increased pulmonary circulation vascular resistance due to various reasons, which mainly leads right heart dysfunction and even death, especially in critically ill patients. Although drug interventions have shown some efficacy improving the hemodynamics PH patients, mortality rate remains high. Hence, identification new targets treatment strategies for imperative. Heparanase (HPA) an enzyme that specifically cleaves heparan sulfate (HS) side chains extracellular matrix, playing critical roles inflammation tumorigenesis. Recent studies indicated close association between HPA PH, suggesting as potential therapeutic target. This review examines involvement pathogenesis, including its effects on endothelial cells, inflammation, coagulation. Furthermore, may serve biomarker diagnosing development inhibitors holds promise targeted therapy treatment.
